Brillion Brush Hog

I got a great deal on a old rusty Brillion brush hog, and I'm looking for some technical help. When the PTO is engaged, the driveshaft turns, the gears turn, but the blades won't. I got them to engage once yesterday, but that was it. I figured there was a shear pin missing or (if they were around then) a slip clutch problem.

Anyone else been through this?

Thanks,

Matt

Is it one of the first models which had pitched blades on a lower plane and straight blades on the upper plane? If so, check the springs in the cage above the blades and the clutch disk the cage fits against. We used to sell lots of cages, springs and disks. Those things became obsolete fast when the simpler and cheaper Bush Hog was marketed.

My Woods mower has the blade hub keyed to the shaft. Mine uses a 1/2" square key for positve engagement between the driven gear shaft and the blade hub. I suspect yours is sheared from running loose.
Unhook itfrom the tractor and chain the mower up securely in the vertical position so it is easy to work on (PTO shaft pointing up as well)and take a look. When you have the hub off it would be a good time to inspect/replace the lower gearbox shaft seal because when things start flopping around it takes out that seal.

Good luck.

The slip clutch is activated on or near the end of the PTO shaft or under the gearbox, in most cases. I also dont think there were shear pins then. It sounds like a faulty gearbox to me.
