Flail Mower or Rotary Mower - Which one is best?

I am debating on purchasing a new 3 point mower of some sort for an IH 424 that I just purchased. I've had rotary cutters before (King Kutter & Hawkline). I am just curious if someone can explain the advantages of one over another. Is one better for a certain kind of terrain or what?

Thanks so much,

Chris

If you price a flail mower, that might make up your mind for you. They are outrageously expensive, if you buy new. And parts are expensive if you are thinking used.

I have both: An ancient Mott F-6 fail and a generic brush hog. The flail does a great job on grass; the knives pick up the grass flattened by the tractor so you get a real even finish. But it doesn't like heavy brush; I switch to the brush hog for that.

if, if, your only going to mow your yard with it a frail mower will do a better job and be safer to operate around where people might be. sharping the blades (replacing them) is a pain compared to the bush hog, but with your tractor i would think you'd only want to run one that is about 6 foot wide. you couldn't pull that same width bush hog. mowing that small amount the blades should last all summer. if your like me and see something that needs a lick, get a bush hog. you can't beat the brand name bush hog either.

Flails make a nice cut in rough grass but won't handle the heavy stuff. Nice thing about a brush hog is you can just drop it on a bramble and make the bramble disappear.

Depends on what you are going to cut? Small trees, rocky ground, stalk chopping? Anything large or rocky I would use a rotary mower.

Fails can be prety weak, but do have a good cut compared to the Bushhog. I think the Bushhog does a fine job on a yard, and you can run rocks, sticks, and debris down with one. I've never owned a flail, but I saw one dude mowing a strip of driveway with one, about an acre or two, and it did a fine job.

If I were you, I'd get the bushhog.
