Which way to the guard bolts go on a JD #5 mower?

I was looking at a JD #5 mower that was sitting in a fence row the other day. The guard bolts had the nuts on the bottom side of the bar, when I got mine it had the nuts on top of the bar. Which way is right or is there a right way? With the nuts on the bottom it looks like the cut hay may flow over the bar easier.

Seems to me that the original guards on our number 5 had the bolts in one way (I don"t remember which) and when we switched to rock guards, it was necessary to change the direction of the bolts. The only trouble we ever really had with it concerned the bolts that held the chain box to the frame. I finally used loctite and no more trouble.

According to the owner's manual.... in reply to unioncreek, 07-05-2007 06:00:57
The nuts are shown on the BOTTOM. (#5 Mower Operator's Manual OM-H10-250.)

The operator's manual for the (later) model #8 showns the nuts on TOP.

Nuts go up.

When that material crosses the bar, it is still standing up and the nuts don't matter one iotia.

With the bolt heads on the bottom the ground will flow by smoother. Its a lot stronger impediment to motion than the cut hay.
