HELP! MF-#3 plunger removal?

I bought a Massey #3 baler that had been sitting for about 40 years, outside. The guy said the plunger was stuck when he bought it, and he never did anything but let it sit. I got the plunger to move, but the THD Wisconsin doesn't have enough power to even keep it moving because it's so tight. I understand the shims have rusted and gotten thicker, but how do you get the plunger far enough back in the chute to remove the shims and clean things up? I had to use a Hi-Lift jack just to free it up - is that the only option?

You will have to disconnect the plunger shaft and drag the plunger out the backend...JJ.

I understand that - it's the "dragging" that I don't know about. I've thought about hooking a chain on it and pulling it out, but was hoping someone would have a magic (and EASIER) solution. Thank you.

Put a stout timber across the back end of the bale chamber, hook a come-along from there to the plunger, and start cranking on it. I am not familiar with the MF, but you should be able to find a place where you can reach in and work the handle of the come-along. Maybe a portable 12V winch would work if you have one. I have used a come-along on an old IH 45, which was working at the time, and it still was a hard pull after I got it past the part where it runs. Use a lot of your favorite rust buster, or just waste oil to slick things up. Make sure you get all the hay dogs and wedges out of the way first.
