Finnally after 4 years of use. " I broke a part"

While ordering the new bill hook I asked if JD had a knotter manual simmular to the NH knotter manual. Acording to the counter guy they don't.

From the photo in the parts book it looks simular to the Nh bill hook. Held in by a pin.

What is the best procedure to replace a bill hook?

Yes, there is a manual for knotters that Deere produced years ago. I have a photo copy of it, my dealer gave me a copy to look at years ago. Any dealer should print out a parts diaghram for you so you can see how the parts go together, and they should be able to tell you how to install it, if they don't then go to another dealer. But yes, it is a roll pin that you punch out that is on the bill hook pinyon gear shaft and it is real easy to do.

i think you need to add or delete shims depending on the amount of play you have in the shaft after you have it assembled. i guess you have to put it all back together and maybe just put a punch in the pin hole that is tight enough to see if you need to add shims or take some out. i never work on anything without having my long handle magnet laying there close, well almost never. working out side is when you need to pick up a piece of indooor/outdoor carpet off the side of the road that is light in color and throw it down under where your working. most of the times it gives the piece you drop an extra place to take another bounce some where off the carpet, but hey, you tried.

Been many years since I replace one but if I remember right yep its a roll pin you remove. Not hard at all to do if you take out the one bolt and flip the knotter assembly up. Shoot I have 2 good used ones laying on the dash of my truck if you need one or 2 of them. These are now old stock I bought years ago and never used them because the bale went out of time and broke a bunch of parts on it

Hi Kelly , Never have had to do it but I've removed the wiper arms a couple of times . The parts book doesn't show any shim washers on the billhook shaft so maybe it's pretty straight forward . Flip the knotter frame up , use a long pin punch to remove the pin , slide it out , clean out the old dry grease , add a little lube to the new one and slide it back in . Make sure and put in a new zerk while you're in there . It can't be THAT easy though 8') ! You'll probably need three hands to hold everything in place while you try and get the roll pin lined up with the holes or there will in fact be some shim washers involved that will fall to the ground and roll someplace that you can't reach easily . Just the normal things that can go wrong . For me it was a shim that fell into the grass and took me about half an hour to find . I don't have a shop or any paved area to work in/on . I've always got to plan on at least 4 hours to do a ten minute job as a result . But the wiper arms came out easy enough so I would think the billhook will too . Someone that's done it will no doubt give you better information . Good luck ! ...Randy

my biggest problem is laying something down and then not being able to find it when i need to use. friend had his b-i-l black lab there as dog was getting in trouble in town. dog would carry off wrenchs screwdrivers hose clamps and chew up hoses and belts. once when i was there dog carried something off dan was cussing dog i said i saw him coming from back side off house. dan said well i guess we staring looking there.
