New Holland 644,648 round balers

I have been thinking about buying a newer round baler ( silage special ),most of the balers with 3000 - 7000 bales have all the original paint on the pickup but some with 3000 bales have alot of the paint off the middle of the pickup.Is this because the balers that do more silage wear the paint off Quicker? Any help would be appiecated, thanks Paul.

Could be..... but I'd guess that there's a lot more bales on the 3000 bale machines than they're letting on. Why would they dump a baler that only made 3000 bales? That was only a little more than a years work for mine, and I wasn't custom baling.
The other possibility is that somebody was PUSHING bales through it... That might accelerate the wear. A pickup that's crammed full and compressing the crop is going to wear.
I'd say they've done more work than you're being led to believe...

Paint off the pickup screams to me acid preservative spraying. My baler and my dads both have had a LOT of hay through them (more than 25,000 rolls each, NH 650's). There is no wear on the paint on the spacers between the teeth on either one.

Fill the pickup a little more and you'll wear the paint off. My Claas has made close to 30000 bales now and worn the paint off more than one set of strippers, full length where hay is in contact with them, and never seen one ounce of acid.
Mind you the zinc plating is still there... just the paint is gone.

We've had a 648 for about 5 or 6 years and there is very little wear on the pickup so far. As mentioned before unless it has electronics, theres no way to know exactly how many bales its done, our 648 counter is resetable.

We do half silage, half dry, always shedded and taken care of. Chceck to make sure the twine cutting bar rotates easily, its the one thing thats given us trouble over the years from lack of lubrication.

I suppose the type of hay would have some effect on paint wear. Acid-based preservatives will lift paint in a big way. I also know that if the balers in question do not have the electronic Bale Command monitor system, you are relying on someone's word as to how many bales have been through a particular machine.

Baled straw with it maybe? Seems to strip paint off pretty fast.
