I'm shopping for an electric brake controller. I've never owned such an animal before and wondering what some of you might recommend. I have read about the Tekonsha Prodigy and it seems like a nice unit...but then again, most any might be good. My trailer is built on a house trailer frame, 3 axles, brakes on front axle.

What all do I need in addition to the controller? Is there a wiring harness to install....or just run a wire back to a plug? I have no idea if my truck is prewired. I have been told some are. The truck is a 96 dodge 1500 4wd. Thanks.

take your truck to an rv dealer and get them to put it in. they'll have it in before you can read the instruction. some jeep products are real funny in how you wire in a plug for a trailer. may hold true for your dodge truck. has the truck got a plug on it already? if its a big round one with 6 wires your half way there. the plug will still have to be wired when you put the controller on. the controller will stay lit all the time unless you disconnect the trailer plug.

Most any brand is pretty good. Yes you have to wire it in, don't remember for sure how many wires there are but there is at least 3. One goes to the brake switch, one to the trailor and one to the battery so its on all the time. Last one I got cost around $80-90
