i recently acuired a 14t square baler but it looks like its not going to get working this year any way my question is thos little round balers allis chalmers made what is the going price for them i know where there is a couple sitting that was in tip top shape when parked and my wife thinks shed rather have them for her horse what should i look at on them as they have been sitting for about 20 years i think they were in a leanto for most of that time thanks johndeereman

i would think your wife would be real unhappy with trying to break off a block of hay to feed from one of those rolls. real hard to handle too.

Dad bought one new in 1948, ran it until 1965, when he retired. Did a lot of custom work, had the same breakdown, twice- a cast part that had to be welded. Taught me how to rake a proper windrow when I was 11 years old- that is the key to making a good bale. Two curls, close together, full width of the pickup. Otherwise, no problems. Handling? Dad built two bale loaders- first one on a WC, second one was a towed unit driven by a car tranny. Of course you need bale hooks to handle the bales. They shedded water and could be left in the field until picked up.

Another handling tip- Dad made a 3 foot long bale hook so one person could stand on the wagon and snag them off the ground. He made all his own hooks in the forge, out of broken horse rake teeth.

I had one of the late model white top balers for a couple of years. They can be a challenge to run, but in some ways are easier to use than a standard baler. Get the manual when you get the baler. Round bales are ok to leave outside, if a rain is coming. As far as pickup goes, I used a 4 wheeler with a snow blade set straight to roll the bales into a pile of 10 or more, then would load 50 or more into a small dump truck and dump them in the barn. The important thing to remember with these balers is they work best on real dry hay. They also do a better job on legume hay, because they roll the leaves that would drop off of a square baler into the bale. In my experience, they bale better after 6 than before.(beers, and pm, that is)

thanks for all youre input my grandfather has two of them and hes been in the junkin mood lately so i think i can get one for a little of nuthin i know he took care of them shoot he got his new mower he refused to cut the power shaft to fit his tractor he just kept replacing the yoke every time it broke well im going to see him tommorow at the family picnic and will ask about them hell probably even help set it up ill keep you posted as to what i find out just looks like the easiest way to get my hay baled this year

Hobby is correct they are hard to pick up, with out a hook,. The balers them selves are ok. It wont let you bale green or tough hay. It will wrap around the feed roler. wide windrows are best, double rake if you bar mow, never start baling with out being sure the brake on the right rear is loose (not stuck to the drum). check the dogs that lock the baler closed to see if their in good condition. If you over fill the bale the dogs will break. then the baler wont stay closed. Be Very Cautious. many fingers, hands and arms have been lost to AC Roto Balers.

that's why they never built big round balers. too bad we can't fix our legal system. anyone who puts their bits where a machine can rip them off maybe has it coming to them.

I have used them for 50 years. Loaned my 214t to my neighbor and hope I never get it back. The hay must be raked like you would for a large round baler. You have 1 bolt to adjust the bale weight, they hardly never need any kind of adjustment. Keep the twine knife sharp and use plenty of oil on the twine tie mechanism they will bale all day long.

In my area you almost can't give one of them away. I used one one summer and will never use one again. They can be a big pain in the but to use. Plus picking the bales up isn't easy either, no string to hold one to. If you don't rake the hay just right you end up with ice cream cone bales and that messes up the belts. They also clog easy and are hard to unclog when they do. I traded in the one I had for a 14T years ago and as I said NEVER again will I own one unless I get it given to me

About four years ago my neighbor priced one from an old Allis dealer. He had four ready to go to the field, $500,your choice. I have seen a few of them in pretty fair shape for $200. Chances are you have a better chance of getting that 14T ready before you buy one of them and get it lined out and ready to go. Just my opinion. It is my opinion you are not just gonna hook on it and go.
