New Idea trailer mower

Where or what would give me the best information on the proper set up for this type of mower?
I bought a mower that is shot and I am not sure where to start in order to get it to work.
The tires are smooth and when you try to cut anything thick the mower shifts to the side and the cutter bar lags behind.
The tongue always sticks up in the air. Shouldn't the mower be better balanced than that?

That is the nature of all trail type mowers, never seen one that was balanced. And what would make it want to do by pulling sideways that means your knife is not doing the work it should be doing. Start by making sure all the parts are in top shape starting with the guards and if the ledger plates (some are replaceable and others are a forged part of guard) are square and sharp, then the sections on the knife are razer sharp (slice paper held loosely against and just pulled across without any pressure. Now by knowing you have a workable pair of cutting edges time to get them together. Look under the knife and make sure the wear plates have a good sharp square edge on the front side for the knife to slide against, the top edge is what keeps the section in alignment with the ledger plate and that wear plate also is adjustable to control foward-back movement of the knife, has to be set close for no movememt like that,just not tight enough it binds. now set the holddowns so they hold the sections against the ledger plates, should have about the clearance of a page of paper, then if the front of the guards, ledger plates, are not resting against the sections evenly then have to adjust the guard by bending either up or down or replacing. A double section on the outer end of the knife will also help it run straiter as will do a better job of cutting than the normal single section. I do have a junk No. 30 here that I am going to part out for parts on a No. 40 semi mount and a later trail type. Smoth tires is the normal. The mower we used was an Oliver and when we got it it had fluid in both tires to give more weight to help that sliding sideways problem but if every thing is set up properly then it should trail straight and mow with a tractor like a John Deere A-B-G-50-60-70, Farmal H-M-SH-SM-300-400, Oliver 66-S66-77-S77 mow in fourth gear in everything that that ground speed is not too rough for. Long answer but hope it helps. To get them beter ballanced on that would have had to have the left wheel set as far back as the cutter bar and that would cause other problems.

Also make sure front of guards are pointy, not riveted or bent over as if they are it will not let them slide in between the stalks of grass.

Thank you. Most likely you have identified the biggest problem with this mower. I know that some of the tops of the guards are sticking up to high, which may be a result of the improper adjustment you pointed out.
