Since we don't have the big cow herd anymore, and our old NH 519 is beyond repair, I am looking for a small spreader for light use a couple times per year. A fellow nearby buys and sells equipment (I have bought from him previously with good results) and has a NH 212 for sale that looks to be in good shape. Anyone have an idea what that is worth and are there any common issues with that unit?

The 212 may be a ground-drive spreader . . . . NH did make them back in the 50s and 60s, look much the same as New Idea and others with the spike beaters and paddle widespread. Good shape around here any spreader is worth at least $1000.

Common problem with alot of New Holland spreaders is that the axle isn't a fully enclosed design. It is setup actually like a U. What happens is manure, dirt, and water will sit in that U and overtime rust the axle out. I've seen them have large holes rusted through them in the middle but it looked solid because of the mass of manure and junk in there. You wouldn't know anything was wrong until you hit a bump just right, (or wrong for that matter) and it would snap the axle and alot of times twist the C-channel that makes up the spreaders frame at the sametime. That is the one thing I'd for sure check on a used spreader particularly a New Holland.
