NI # 30A mower hints

I"ve got a # 30a NI mower that I just bought,never got a manual for it. Replaced pitman and a bunch of sickle sections, now I"m ready to make hay. any tips, or things I can do to make this go smooth. 1st time haying since a teenager .

my sentiments exactly -

I have an old ford sickle mower (501)
that i use - and I have found I have MUCH better luck starting mowing at 4pm then i ever did starting at 9 or 10 in the morning

Thanks, I"ll be using a Massey Harris 33 for mowing, and hopefully will keep all my fingers. Is there any way to get it to lift more? Do the newer models lift higher?

I have a few

Remember that it was designed when the avg speed for working was around 4mph. Don't try to go to fast. You may even need to slow down in heavy grass.

The bar only raises about 10" in the lifted position. No where enough to clear a windrow and it defently doesn't like go through cut hay. Keep your plan of cutting so that you do not have to travel over cut hay.

Give the hold downs a wack with a hammer before you start and save yourself a lot of greif.

When you arrive at the field and are done becareful lowering/lifting the bar for mowing/travel position. Wouldn't what to see you loose any digits

Best thing you can do is wait until the very hottest, driest part of the day, this is when the hay driest and most brittle and will cut the easiest. Aside from that just make sure you oil the heck out of the sickle, grease all the zerts, relax and have fun!
