Bearing problem on a 479 haybine

I do about 20 acres of hay every year and for the past 4 years the outside bearing on the top roller of my 479 has gone bad. Last week when I was cutting I saw smoking coming from under the cover. When I took a look the bearing was glowing red. Once thing I noticed was a lot of hay wrapped around the metal shaft of the roller. My top roller is missing a bit of rubber and has a tendency to wrap around the roller occassionally. I'm wondering if packing all that hay around the bearing is causing it to overheat. Anybody got an idea what could be happening and if its the hay getting packed anyway to prevent it. Its looking to me like its time for another haybine. Its a tough pill to swallow for 20 acres and the cost of a decent haybine. Hate to go back to my mowing machine and crusher.

Charlie, I have a 477 and have not had that problem. HOWEVER, I used to eat bearings all the time on my old Cunningham conditioner for just the reason you state - Hay in the bearing. Figure out a way to keep the hay out of the bearing and you will solve the problem.

Yes, hay wrapping on the shaft will cook the bearing. I've had it happen more than once on the baler....
I'd think there should be a shroud around there to keep the hay from getting in and wrapped. The bad rollers are most likely not helping either....
So unless there's a stripper or shield missing, another haybine might be the easiest solution.

Dunno,

Where are you buying your bearings? Those things ought to last 30 years.

i'm not familiar with your machine but have run alot of ih and jd stuff over the years. on the 990 ih's they had a half of a cone shaped piece that went between the rollers on each outside edge to direct cut hay away from the ends of the rollers. maybe yours is missing or you could make you one and weld it in place. make it out of something real thick so it want vibrate off to ease. that should help your problem

Charlie,is the shroud or shield still in place inside the brg,if so does it still have a smooth 1 3/8" hole,if not then grass could get to the brg and overheat.I do not know of anything else that would cause a premature failure.

It does have a shroud but its not a tight fit around the shaft. I've been getting the bearings from New Holland. They are a sealed bearing. I'm soon going to have more invested in bearings then the machine is worth.
