JD #9 sickle bar

two questions, I am new to using sickle bars and I was wondering if there is a simple reason why the bar gets clogged no matter what speed I go. Is a dull blade a likely culprit? The other question is how much is a JD #9 worth in upstate NY if it is in good condition?

As a frame of reference, I just bought two JD #5 mowers, and I am from Upstate NY (about an hour north of Albany). I paid 300 for both of them. One was pretty worn, the other is in real nice shape, just needs some paint. So, I have a working mower, and one for parts.

#1 reason is running a loose knife. you need to keep the knife down on the guards so that there is no slack by bending the tabs.

#2 reason- knife is dull. Use angle grinder to sharpen.

#3 reason- excessive decaying thatch in the hay will clog a bar up anytime. Use only when thatch has rotted up and sunk in.
