Thanks to a lot of very good advice from you guys on the forum I got my MF--- MF41 sickle mower cutting great by adjusting hold down clips and guard alignment. Then cut about 30 acres at good speed.

New problem. I broke the head that attaches the knife to the drive.(about a 6 inch long part that is riveted to the knife and bolts to the drive) It appears to have been cracked a long time, and finally the last piece of metal holding it together broke. That break area is shiny and appears to be fresh where the previous break is dull and smooth.

I can buy a whole new knife with a new head from sickle service but before I do, my question for you is: is this break an indication that I have some other problem in the mower and it will break the new part..or break something else, as soon as I reassemble it...or is this just something that happens once in a while?

Can I just replace the part and mow on?

Thanks for the input.

Mine broke this year also but had it welded back togeather and so far its wokring. I did go out and buy a new one but havn't installed it yet. The price for the head and ball joint was $155.00 and for just the ball joint it was $167.00! Figure that one out! Thats for a Hesston pt10

Not sure on a balanced head what the knife head looks like but on a standard mower with a ball on the knife head they can be welded. Many a time they would be brazed while other times welded with steel rod depending on who did the welding and what they had to work with, gas, steel or brazing or electric welder. And those heads were at times welded 2 & 3 times over their life of 20+ years. And that could have been just a fatigue crack or caused by the knife having not been sharp or in adjustment if you were having cutting problems before.

It could be both. I would look for slop in the pitman linkage or like the JD 1209 The pin on the drive end may be woren or the bushing/bearing the arm it goes in also.

...the MF 41 has no pitman arm, it has the Dyna-balance system, which is a crank type setup with, you guessed it, bushings. They are getting harder to find parts for.
