I have an 8 wheel v rake and an old JD side delivery. Which would be better for the ground and new growth on a first cut field (alfalfa/tim)?
I used a JD 4010 (34 tires) and a 1219 (9ft) to mow 27 acres yesterday. Used 4th gear at 1900 RPM, said about 7 mph on odometer but it took me 6 H 15 Min. Just over 1/2 tank of diesel. I thought I would make it in 5 hours. Comparison or math whiz out there? Maybe lost 15 minutes on clearing after gopher hole and plugging up.
Oh yeah, waited till ten to start, still damp and at 4pm tires still showed wet when comeing in. No dry farm this year. Bob

Got me on the gear guys, My bad. Got it all raked with the V, had problems till I figured out the right side rakes were rolled over 180, Made a big difference. Rained overnight so no baling today, plus our son called, we are leaving for Mayo shortly to take our 3 week old grand daughter down there. A few prayers would be appreciated.

Bob, according to my Operator's manual for my 4010D, 1900 rpm in 4th gear is only 4 and 1/4 mph. And for comparison, just last week I mowed just over 25 acres in just over 5 hours, that was in 5th gear and using a 9 foot discbine (NI 5209).

So I would say that your 6 hours or so is about right, but your ground speed was 4 and 1/4 mph, not 7.

As to your rake question. It makes no differance to the stubble which one you use. But if you are throwing 2 swathes together you make half as many trips with the v rake.

(9 feet x 7 miles/hour x 5280 feet/mile) / 43560 feet^2/acre = 7.64 acres per hour - straight awa y no turning - no stopping, full width cut

4th gear is not 7 mph

I am glad someone has moisture. You can't even get the tires wet here. Hasn't even been any dew lately. 60% chance today, but nothing yet.

Nine foot X 7mph= 63 acres in a 10 hour day or 6.3 acres per hour. This even allows for time due to turning, but pretty good estimator.

I am not a math whiz. I average between three and four acres an hour with a nine foot at a little less than four MPH.
