Can someone help me ID this 2 Row IH planter? This was purchased by my grandfather and was used for planting a little of everything over the years and in his later years, sweet corn, in the garden. She has sat in the weeds for about a decade without use until i rescued it.

I got her running this spring and though the fertilizer attachment is pretty much toast it put sweet corn in the ground better than I had expected.

I've searched CIH parts online but nothing really matches this planter, it is similar to the 251 though. If i can tackle the model number I can hopefully track down an doperators manual so I can better understand getting it properly setup.

Thanks for the help eh

J

(BTW, the boxes on the fertilizer box mounts are going to be retrofitted to take their place as soon as i get to making brackets)

Roosty, I have done a little research and it is not a 249 either. I can't find any that is like it. I will look some more. I have a bunch of old manuals in a box somewhere that may have something in it.

Thanks for the help eh. Looked at a 449 operators manual today and passed on it... I also looked at the horse drawn planter that is much like this one (with the lever lift and seat) but the price was a bit steep.

This planter was purchased by my grandfather a number of decades back, longer than I've been around which puts us aquiring it prior to the early 70's. Therefore I don't know the history.

I only have one pair of seed plates, the ones that are in it, corn plates. She needs work to get everything free so i can shift sprockets and what not to change shaft speeds. Other than that it put sweet corn in on 30 inch rows and spaced them 4 - 6 inches apart... a bit tigheter than I like it and hence why I want an operators manual so that I can adjust and setup appropriately.

I do believe you could a number of different add-ons for this planter, discs to precut and different fertilizer drops and what not.

If anyone has a manual and would be willing to scan it i'd be most grateful

Thanks

Jamie

It resembles a No. 8 the most.

That was the only horse drawn planter with the markers that folded on the side and not up.

They where built from 1918 till 1931.

Of course you know that those fiberglass boxes are not original with that planter.

Gary, it does look more like the no 8 than any I can find. Suppose it was made in a tractor model?

Those fiberglass hoppers are off of our old 400 Cyclo... Planter is long gone but they were still sitting in the barn... so I figured what the heck, we'll make some brackets put some sprockets on the fertilizer attachment drive shaft and put the chains on and away we go...

I'd really like to have original fertilizer bottoms and hoppers... I missed a pair at auction this past spring because i was a bit too frugal.

This planter was never horse drawn... It is a trip, no provision for a seat anywhere on her...

resembles a 251 if you look at the CNH parts site... but i am not 100% sure...

Roosty, I can tell you for certain that it is not a 251. I have a 251 and it has the smaller packing wheels on it and fits the 3 or 2 point hitch. I still think it is a 249. I have never had one, but it does look quite simular to the 449 a neighbor had. It was 4 row.

i have a pair of seed hoppers that i think will fit this planter. they are new old stock and split in half in the middle so that you could put corn seed in one and bean seed in the other and plant both of them at once. if your interested send me an em. i"d let them go cheap, but the shipping will cost a little i"m sure. most of the blue paint is still on them.
