the purpose of raking hay isn't just to put it in a windrow , but to expose the underside on the cut hat to sunshine and wind to help it dry. i think your asking for a lot of trouble when trying to rake and bale hay at the same time in certain types of hay. right now in n al i think you can cut, rake and bale all in the same day its so dry.

Well I tried a nh254 tedder. It has some coggs that you can flip to ted or rake. I can pull two 7 foot rows together. My NH 310 eats it up in 2 or 3rd gear. I don't think I ever use the ber rake again, the tedder really speeds raking up. I start in the middle and work to the outside. Last row I just dive out of the field.

How are you raking that you only turn one direction? Are you only doing one single pass per windrow?

Never heard of that.

that is the way we did it for the idiot cubes never used a round baler on the farm. always raked turning to the right as that threw the windrow out for a gentle curve the baler could follow, if turned left then the curve was too tight. also always baled same direction as was mowed and raked. didn't have those big fields like you have. most were 20 acres, some were smaller, couple were 2 acres

Aw, I see.

The balers work better on the smaller windrows then?

I bale the same windrow I roll. I never single any hay with the rake. I use to when baling with that old Ford baler and a tractor that had a fast low gear in it. But with the IH or NH baler and a slower gear I make as big a windrow as possible.

yes Used a 9' cut haybine to mow with. Only doubled on outside round and sometimes broke that one back up. Baled with a Int 46 baler 2cd low/direct(3mph), 1st(2mph) in real heavy stuff. baler running right on 60 strokes a second. kept you busy loading 1st cutting by yourself, started out helping by 8, 13yo was loading wagon with girl cousin one year older, aunt drove the tractor, grandma, grandpa, younger cousins unloaded in elevator and uncle mowed it all along with hauling to the barn. by 16 handled wagon by myself. 600 bales a normal day 1000 a big day still did over 20,000 a year. when uncles were younger and getting along better they did over 60,000 a year all stored in the barn.

You can go either way when you rake regardless of which way the rake moves the hay. New Holland makes rakes that move hay either way and made a hitch to pull both left and right hay-moving rakes together so you can roll two rows of hay together in one pass and have a bigger windrow for your baler.

we raked to the right most of the time. same direction as mowing.
some combines cut on the left not certain why, maybe due to the hand clutch??

If you have rake in the next pass means you have to try not to steal from the last windrow.

I've been messing around trying new patterns, I started raking up the middle and worked my way out so I wouldn't have to drive through the windrows to get out.

I wants to mounting a rake so I can rake and bale at the same time. Leaving the hay tedded out works best here to dry it and raking before baling wastes an hour or two of drying time in the day.

Ken, there used to be a wheel rake attachment you could mount on the front of the tractor that would do what you want, rake and bale at the same time. Have not seen one in twenty years, but you could ask Burton @ Agri-mechanical. It was really simple. Basically two wheels on a pipe, that was mounted on a spring loaded hinge to follow the ground contour. Maybe someone has a picture?
