hey all,

currently I have a massey 120 square baler which this last time around didn"t do so well in windrows that are not the best and had some tieing issues when trying to make a lighter bale(knots hanging on the bill hooks), would moving up to a new holland 315 help me at all and how do the two balers compare to each other?

Thanks,
Kelly

I had a Massey baler as my starter baler and eventually upgraded to NH 315 and I love it. The NH 315 is a large capacity baler and likes the larger windrows. Just run it about 60 strokes per minute so it wont blow up the feeder assembly. I just made first cut a few weeks ago and it didn't miss 1 bale. I like to run it thru the NH shop prior to season, just because. And run NH twine through it, not the farm store brands. When it's time to bale, I hate doing things twice!

The New Holland 315 baler is a bit bigger capacity, but is pretty near as old as your massey so wear and tear and abuse have to be looked at before just buying it. Simple places to look for abuse are any places it has been welded, they will show it has either been worked hard or abused, general wear, look at where the twine lays across the bill hooks and check for grooves where the twine runs across the edges of them, and in the eyehole of the needles for wearing a slot from the twine running through them. Also look at the cross conveyor for damage as overspeed on the PTO is very hard on it. Fix the bale knot hanging on your massey is not to hard, assuming the twine has been cut, make sure the twine tension coming out of the twine box is not too tight, if you pull the twine at 90 degrees at the spring, the spring should bend about 1 1/2 inches at most and then the twine should slide through, if too tight the knot is too tight to slide off the billhook, also the little coil spring on the twine discs should be set to length, not sure what that spec is, has been a while, lastly, with any baler use GOOD quality twine, if the twine breaks on the bale it will not pull the knot off the billhooks, sometimes the ball looks good on top but has gotten damp on the bottom and the twine breaks there these two balers use totally different knotter styles with the Massey being the SureTie design.

Thanks for the input and all of the suggestions, I"ll be sure to check all of that out, I"m kinda thinking that my problem has to do with the lack of a hay check on the outside of the bale chamber, (left side looking from the back of the baler) it has one on the inside and in the middle but is missing the hay check on the outside which is the side that I"m having issues with, the other side works great! Thanks for all the help!
