MF1440 Help - PLEASE

New to round bales, I purchased a MF1440 that is giving me ulcers. Any suggestions as to what to attack first to fix this thing will be most appreciated. First, tailgate does not lock unless someone is pushing down on the tailgate as it closes. On occasion, it becomes unlocked during baling (not good). The greater problem is that while it bales a good tight bale, the bales will not leave the baler. I mean pushing down on the bales with the forks of another tractor will not pull them out...I lifted the front of our JD990 and the bale did not budge. I can tell that the left side of the baler is bent in a little, but not enough to jam the bale in that tight. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

I am not familiar with the Vermeer 504/MF1440 series, but these are some things I have learned about 605F/1560 balers. On the 605F the last bit of stroke of the tailgate cylinder moves the latch to lock the tailgate. If the cross tube on the latches is bent, they will not move freely. Shut the PTO off and Lift the tailgate part way and lock it. Disconnect the arm that connects the latches to the ear on the cylinder. Try pivoting the latches. They should move freely. If not, find the source of the problem and correct.

As for sticking bales let me ask you some questions. Are you making baleage or dry hay? If you are making dry hay, is the hay dry enough? That used to be a "FEATURE" of the old Vermeer balers. If the hay was not dry enough to bale, then you had trouble with plugging, hay wrapping around rollers and if you did finish a bale, it would be stuck solid in the bale chamber. I have fought for half an hour getting one of those bales out. The bales you make like that are going to mold and are junk. You could not bale trouble free unless the hay was dry enough to be properly preserved in the bale.

I do not know if any of this is applicable, but it might help.

John

You have 2 choices concerning the bale not coming out. Install restricter plates, look like disc blades and install on both sides of baler side panels over the large roller. These cause the bale not to be so tight in chamber. The other way is not to feed very much on the sides of pickup. The restricter plates really work good. Makes a big difference in power needed to run machine, and bales will fall out.

Regarding the restrictor plates....is this something one has to make/weld on, or are there add on aftermarket ones available, and if so, where? Sounds like a great idea to me. Thanks in advance for any info you might have.

They were a dealer item. Bought baler new in 82 and installed the restricters the next summer. You may contact a MF dealer and see if they are still available. Maybe place a want add for them here on the classifieds. Sure you could make them, guess you could use a disc blade and a little cutting and welding and be ready to go. If you need more info let me know.

It sounds like you baler frame might be twisted or at least the tailgate. For tailgate coming open while baling disconnect hyd. hoses after tailgate lock to bale. This will tell if it is the tractor or the baler. The tailgate can be straightened with a block of wood between the tailgate and frame, then pull down with taigate cylinders. Procedure for straightening frame is to long to post.
