Hook gas grill to LP tank?

Lost the first post I wrote before submitting so this will be shorter...

Can I hook my gas grill to the big LP tank in the yard to eliminate being overcharged (and the hassle) of filling those 20 lb tanks?

Or is there an adapter I can put on my 1000 gallon LP tank to fill my 20 lb tanks from it? I remember grandpa filling his forklift tanks from his but never paid much attention to how (and knowing grandpa, if it was a safe technique...).

Any change made to the propane system for home heating or any other use inside the house will need to be done or at least checked by your propane company. Lost a big chunk of Lake Wilson a few years back when the 1000 Gal. tank at the fire hall blew-up. Now all the propane companies in the area require annual inspection of your system and won"t deliver to any they feel are unsafe until the situation is fixed. As for using the big tank to run the grill shouldn"t be any differant than running a gas stove.

I would check with your LP gas supplier about making a connection to the big tank. They may even do it. Should have a separate shutoff valve
and regulator. Hal

I do just like Pete says for filling. Except you can fill them in the winter because the pressure in the big tank is greater than the small tank. I live in MN. You have to open the bleader screw on the 20lb and it will fill right up. Just be carefull if you have an older tank so that you don't over fill it.

i was always worried about getting snow bound sometime and running out of gas. i have 3 100 lb cylinders i use to heat my shop with until the wood burning stove kicks in and it just took a few fittings and a flexible line to fix it to where i could use the 1oo lb cylinders if i need to. i did install a cut off valve on my big tank so the little tank wouldn't try to fill it and another shur off valve on my line going to the little tank. when the gas man could finally get to me then i'd just swwitch the valves around and was back in business. i liked the other guys suggston on a flexible line to a point. i think they make a flexible line from metal rather than a rubber one. i would think that a rubber one might weather and get a crack in it at the wrong time. also the presure coming out of those big tanks is only like 2 to 4 pounds i think.

To fill 20# tank from 1000 gal tank: Install a liquid withdrawl valve (sometimes called a grain dryer valve) on big tank. (tank does not need to be empty to do this) This does not install under the cover. Have a hose made to run from this valve to a fitting that will connect to your small tank. Keep small tank in shade for a few hours (Not in your house-BOOM). In hottest part of day fill the tank. Pressure will be higher in big tank and gravity and physics will fill it in about 5 minutes. This method will not work good in cold weather. Fitting, etc can be obtained at a propane dealer. Hope this helps. Pete

My grill has been hooked up to the big tank for years and it works great. I just tapped into the high pressure line outside the house and ran copper tubing to where the grill is located and then an eight foot hose to the grill regulator.That way you can move the grill around a bit if the wind and smoke are in the wrong direction. Make sure you have a shutoff on the grill line where you tap into the main line. Jim

It would cost quite a bit to acquire the pump and plumbing to fill your 20# off the bulk tank. Open the lid on the bulk tank and see if you can find a POL valve - one with LH thread like in your 20# tank - not connected to anything. If you have the newer 20# tank, it would be like the inner thread, not the outer. If you have an old regulator, it should screw right in. If you have a newer regulator on your grill, you can buy an adapter and/or an extender hose if needed from your gas supplier or a camping supply store like Camping World. Then you can grill next to the bulk tank.

Guy I know went to Northern and got an adapter to fill small tanks from large one. Never had any dealings with that issue myself.

Those adapters are to fill the throw-away torch tanks from a grill tank by gravity.
