Haybine Drive Belt

Help,
I am trying to get my John Deere 480 (supposed to be just like the 1209),haybine fixed. I posted earlier, but did not get any help. I am trying to figure out how to get a new belt onto the wobble box. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a way to get the darn belt around the gearbox drive shaft. Do I take the gearbox off? Even if I loosen the gearbox, the drive shaft will probably not allow me to move it much. Any ideas?

Warren,I'm suprised a JD 480 moco is still cutting hay. I delivered them to customers when they were sold "new" and parts flew off of them and frames broke. They are not even closely like a JD 1209 more like an early NH moco but not near as good. Tx Jim

Allan is right - I had to do this on my 480 a few years ago. If I remember correctly, I had to remove the couplers from both sides, then there was barely enough room to take out the gearbox. The weak point on 480s is the coupler between the PTO shaft and the input side of the gear box. I had something jam it that broke this. When I went looking for a replacement I was lucky enough to find Deere"s replacement for that coupler, which included a shear bolt and grease fitting. The 480 was Deere"s first mower conditioner, and it shows. It isn"t very much like a 1209 at all.

Warren,

I don't know anything about your machine, but if it is built like most are, that darned gearbox/drive mechanism has got to be removed/backed out of the way first to allow the belt to be routed around it.

Sad, but true.

I spent quite a while under a NH 489 last year getting a broken belt out, ended up tying it off to the truck and driving to pull it free.

The new one was able to get hammered in while twisted sideways to clear the pulley.
