We have some grass hay ground that we�re wanting to food plot this year. We mowed it off, and my friend has a 16� heavy JD tandem disc that I honestly expected to tear the ground up pretty good after mowing it. However, after 6 or so passes, I�m a bit surprised to see very little soil getting turned over/mixed in with the mowed grass. Aside from rolling it over with a plow first, is there something else someone would recommend doing with it to get it fine enough to get a 1240 JD planter through it? Thanks!

Only way to go around here is a plow, or a chisel plow making 2 passes crossing eachother to rip it out. A field cultivator would be another option, but that would take quite a few passes too to get any kind of seedbed without plowing. Last year we borrowed the enighbor's disc to go over some plowing, and just for grins I set it down in the next hay field to get plowed and it cut in pretty good. it did have about 100-200 gallons of water on it though....

JDBill;

If I understand your post you are trying to disk thru the grass after it has been cut and is laying flat on the ground. That may keep the disk from cutting in. Also it dont work to try to plow after mowing if the grass is stilll on the field.

That's about the way it is, and is going to be....
Burn it off with Roundup in the Fall if you plan to use it in the spring... then a disc will do a half assed job of breaking it up. Otherwise, plow it or till it up with a rototiller. The tiller may be your only option at this point...

use a smaller disc...like a 6 footer with a couple motor blocks chained on top...thats what i use on mine...wide disc tends to float on sod.

You can only plow sod then even discing once or twice wont get it. I used a tiller on some here after discing failed to get it all. If you dont get it all you will have spots of grass back for years to come the stuff is really tough! Sorry for the bad news ;((

Can you adjust the angle of the blades? If so, try more angle to get it to cut. If no adjustment, may try after a rain when the ground is a little softer. If can't wait, use a bottom plow.
