What is the value of wheat straw left by combine

I will hopefully be harvesting wheat here in southeast Iowa in a few weeks and am intending to leave the straw in a windrow for baling.

What would be a good price for my straw, per small square bale or large round bale? Someone else is baling it and buying it. Not looking for retail price.

Don't want to give it away, but some reasonable value.
Thanks for any information.

We baled straw right behind the combine last year. I paid the guy .75 a bale.

The farm stores here in MD sell the straw bales for $ 4.00 a bale. They may be higher this year do to the dry weather. Hal
PS: Hay will be in short supply too. They're predicting milk to be $5.00 a gallon. It's close to $4.00 now.

Typically, if you plan to bale the straw, do you cut your wheat shorter with the combine, mow it after combining, or just take it like it is?
If I come in behind someone who left the straw chopper going, could I bale the straw? Will it rake, or would I have to cut it and then rake? James

I do plan to cut it shorter than necessary to get just the grain. May not cut it as short as soybeans. I have removed the straw chopper. If you don't the straw is too fine to bale well and of course you do not want it spread all over.

I get 2.75 bale out of field. But if you are the owner and some one else baling and taking it $1.00 bale. O r some producers give it to me for the baling just to get rid of it. Whatever you to can feel happy with

I'm not too far from you and last year we sold some wheat straw out of the field (off our hayracks) for $1.50/bale. If you figure $.80 per bale for baling that would be about $.02 per pound of straw if I'm figuring it right. I think two cents per pound in the windrow sounds fair.

But what should I get as the producer, not the person that bales and then sells it? Just the price of the straw laying in the field ready to bale, $ per bale, i.e. $0.50 or $1.00 or $1.50 per bale?

sold mine last year for .80 same guy wants it this year but I told him it will cost 1.20 Why? because the price of everything has gone up.

A couple of years ago I read an article that said straw was worth around 60-80 cents/bale in fertilizer. With the higher fertilizer prices, I suspect that a bale contains more than $1.00 worth of fertilizer. So I wouldn't sell it unbaled in the field for less than $1.00/bale, and would be inclined to expect closer to $1.50/bale.

I'm currently selling my wheat straw for $3 a bale. I'm cheaper than the local hardware store at $3.99, the garden supply store at $4.99, and my local TSC at $5.99.

When I started selling straw 3 years ago I was getting $1.50 a bale.

I'm in central Indiana.
