i bought a pull type john deere 1224 windrower. i have just gotten it and was trying it out in some pretty tall thick brome. the brome is about 3 feet tall and taller in some areas. the problem i had was the hay kept getting wrapped on the auger. now, i know my tractor is too small (i'm getting my bigger one back together) but just had to try it out. i was using a 40 hp minnie moe. it seemed to work much better going faster then slower, but dont have the ponies to go faster. is my auger wrapping problem all due to going to slow and too small of tractor?
thanks
Gary

Long brome is a challenge, we had a NH489 with bad rollers and the grass was long enough to wrap and bind onto the rollers. Because the rollers where not working the wadboard? whatever the thing behind the reel is would not strip clean of hay and the batts would get covered in hay too and the whole mess would come to a halt.

Replaced the rollers and all is great again.

I have the same problem with my 1100 sp new holland. only in brome grass though. the conditioner will help if it is close enough to grab some of the hay and pull it through before it wraps. but watch it it is no fun to unplug a conditioner w/o power reverse. If machine isnt up to speed with a conditioner on it the brome will wrap on the conditioner rolls also. I really hate cutting brome(my .02)

If it is wrapping in the center where the conditioner would be, it may be because the conditioner is not there to pull the hay away from the auger...

Other things to check are the strippers and how they are adjusted to the auger. May have to be replaced if badly worn. Also, make sure there are no gouges to the auger flighting causing the wrapping to start.

Removal of the conditioner should "save" a lot of power consumption, but may cause your problem.

That might be about 1/2 the hp you want for a 14 foot unit? Hyd drive esp tends to use up 1/3 of the hp as heat.

I'm not familiar with those JD models, augers are not always the best idea for green crops. Anyhow that is what I hear 'around here.'

Not familiar with JD model numbers,so is this a windrower or a mower conditioner?

If its just a windrower 40 HP should be enough.

If it is a mower conditioner 40 is a bit to little.

just a windrower. the guy had the crimper off so i told him i did not want it back on. uses hydraulic pump that runs off pto to power the unit. found that in low gear wide open did not seem fast enough to push hay through with out the auger picking it up and wrapping it tight. second gear seemed better but not enough power up hills.

yeah, 40 HP is definatley too light for a 14' unit. We run a 14' Hesston with our Massey 285, at about 85 HP. In thick hay that's even a little small. Without the crimper, I'm sure 60 HP would run it, but I wouldn't want less than what we've got. I sometimes run it with an Oliver 1855, which dynos at 105 HP.

Didn't know it was a 14 footer either.

That may be a load for your minnie.

Those hydrualic pumps use quite a bit of HP by themselves.
