Hi all , Just finished with 4 acres grass hay . Another dismal crop :( . It just wasn't growing . It was barely 10 inches tall and that was only in certain spots in the field but it had already gone to seed . I got 78 bales . The grass had plenty of rain so that wasn't it . The potassium was , according to the soil test , very high at 333ppm and phosphorus was medium at 17ppm . Magnesium was 220 ppm and calcium was 2800ppm . " p " and " k " were up from two years ago ( " p " was about 10 and " k " was 68 )and the ph is 6.7 , up from 6.4 . The co-op suggested 100 #'S per acre of 18-46-0 and 100 #'s of 46-0-0 . Does this sound right ? Would to much potassium slow the growing and make it pale in color ? Actually the baled hay was excellent looking ! It dried in 24 hours with very low humidity and a strong northwest wind . Nice green color in the bale , that's a first for me ! But I really need to get a hefty second and third cutting if possible . I've thought of overseeding some rye just to make some volume and then this next spring frost seed some more timothy and brome . But for now I have to fertilize but don't really trust the new agronimist at the co-op yet because it doesn't seem like he wants to deal with us small guys . No money in it for him I guess . This is what he suggested so was wondering if that's what I should get . Any and all advice welcome ! Thanks !! ...Randy

The hay crop is the same here in there southwest corner of WI too. It's more like a second cutting of hay. Very short adn drys real fast. I am too hoping for a good second crop. Our alalfa was just starting to bloom in some fields up to maybe 50% bloom in others. Man is it late this yr.

It was that early cold snap. Everyone is complaining about it and having the same difficulity.

Just let 'er grow.

Numbers all look pretty good, that leaves short on N. As does the descrption of the crop color.

An early cold snap woulda held it back too as mentioned.

I'd go for the N. The P will help you down the road, would be about close to enough for now, but as long as you are spreading.....

I think the Easter weekend frost probably has as much to do with it as anything. We've got 170 acres of hay up so far and have less than 200 5x6' round bales and 680 small square bales off of it. Last year we had 600 round bales off our first cutting and this year we will be lucky to get 250. The frost set our hay back a month and I think it put enough stress on it that it never fully recovered.
