Looking @ buying a nice condition 1310 Gehl round baler. Makes a 4x4 bale with manual wrap. Anyone know the pro's and con's of this model.
Just trying to find out if I should stay away from it or buy it.
Thanks

Well here is my 2 cents on them. THEY ARE THE ONLY BALER MADE!!!!! !!!! We have a OMC 590, Gehl bought the design from them to make the 1310 and its big brother 1710. I have put close to 8000 bales through our machine in the yrs we owned it. I have baled every thing from dry hay and straw to green sudan grass for silage. Ours is just a single twine tie. Later ones used twin twine tie. Yes they do have sprockets walk off the shafts. New shafts and hub are pricey through Gehl. But, a good machine shop can fix you right up. Yeap there is alot of chains too, but then again look at a Deutz Allis GP2.50 drum baler. They use alot of chains but more bigger ones then the gehl. I had to replace our main drive chain 4 times since we bought it. Once every 5 yrs. I ran a DA 2.50 yesterday. They too are good balers but the auto tie is a joke period. We like them so much we bought a 596 II/1710 to fix up and use also. I would rather worry about a few chains then trying to keep all them belts just right and not walking over each other.

I have one I use for balage. Handles anything except rained on windrows if they're still wet underneath, roll the windrow over and its fine.Fixed chamber, soft core bale but still plenty tight for balage.Easy to operate. Downsides are lots of roller chain in the drive, gears sometimes walk off the shafts (finaly welded a couple fast, be fun when a bearing goes out) and Gehl is no longer building farm machinery, parts are still available but for how long?
