Hi All , I just finished building a replacement swath-aerator for my IH 990 . Origanal was gone when I got it . Cost $16.00 for a new piece of tubing , some scrap steel , 9 compressor bars from a couple of junked 14T balers and about 4 hours work . Anyway , Do they actually work ? Does the crop actually dry faster by using it ? How " steep " should it be set for staight grass and/or a mix with alfalfa or is it trial and error ? Thanks ! ...Randy

Not sure what you are talking about. Just got out my manual (told you I was a manual collector) for a 816 mower-conditioner and it does not say a word about what you are talking about.

Hi Leroy , A swath-aerator is just a rake looking device ( It has 9 tines 16 inches long in a 7 foot space ) that hangs behind the rolls and deflects the hay being discharged to the ground crumpling it up . It's adjustable from flat out so there is no interference with the hay to straight down . It's supposed to keep the hay fluffy to let air under it . I cut about 4 acres this morning before work but it was just grass and so thin I doubt I'll get 50 bales . Last year on this 4 acres for first cutting I got nearly 200 bales . The aerator didn't seem to do much on such thin grass . But it dried pretty good so I should be able to bale it tomorrow afternoon maybe . I'll find out if it works better on the 2 acres of very mature alfalfa when and if I ever get a good weather window to get it dried down . I'll need at least 5 days of good weather for that . Most of it is just on the north side of my grove . Very little breeze can get to it and some is shaded for part of the day , but that's why it's where the best hay grows , the ground is always moist . Take care ! ...Randy
