My neighbor that I work for part time thinks his monitor may be acting up. Before he spends time and money on sensors, He was wondering if anyone here had one laying around that you were not using that he could either use or buy to test out.

I placed an ad in the wanted ads but thought maybe I would get some help here.

Probably too late to help, but the local CIH dealer will check the box for free, which I had done twice while trying to get mine to work. I finally gave up. A lot of potential problem areas, such as had tp replace both main connectors at $100/each because resistance was to high and cleaning wouldn't solve the problem. Bought a sensor checking device from Shoup but was so tired of working on the darn thing, that it never got used. In retospect I suspect that the drum drive sensor wasn't functioning. Bought a CIH 900 with a working monitor, sent the 400 down the road and haven't looked back.

Its most likely sensors. Move them around. If the troubles move with the sensors its sure sensors. The photo eye side of the sensor gets its glass ground from the seed and it can't see the light anymore. The only permanent cure is replacement. But they are also messed up by dirt, which can include seed coatings, graphite, or talc added to keep the seed moving.

It is possible to have contact problems at the cable connections too and to have pinched wires that are broken off completely. I like DeoxIT from Cramolin (go to Antique Electronic Supply) to clean connections.

If its a population monitor, don't forget the speed sensor(s) too in the cleaning process.

JD sold a tester for monitor and sensors that I used again this year on my JD 7000 that told me which sensor to change and the monitor worked perfectly for my planting.

Shoup sells a sensor checker that costs less than a sensor, I haven't checked to see if it works with IH sensors, I never worked on my old Cyclo 400 long enough to make the monitor work though if I had I might not have been quite as willing to scrap it as I did. A working monitor would have told me about its ills before I did the whole field without planting or missing a row.

Thanks for the tips Gerald, I will print them out and give them to my neighbor.
