disk mower questions

I am looking into getting a disk mower for 50 acres of cool season grass hay. Are there belt vs shaft drive? Advantages to one over the other? What items should I look at on a used one? Any information will be appreicated.

You want a belt drive. I'm partial to Kuhn.... but you want a belt drive between the PTO shaft and the cutterbar.
We had 2 old Zweegers mowers that were shaft driven. They would often wind hay on the shafts, heat and split the shafts if not caught quickly, or burn a cross out.... not to mention the racket and vibration they made.
Keep the belts adjusted on the Kuhn and it will seldom give a problem. I'm sure the others with belt drive would be similar.
Personally, I'd argue the merits of the Kuhn bar over all the others too, but there's not need to start a brand war..... They're one of the more expensive for a reason. They're built for a long service life of hard use. I've got a NH465/Kuhn GMD77HD, and a neighbour has one also.... and I can tell you, it's one tough mower. The bar has never been opened on mine. Just belts and PTO parts, blades, discs, shoes, and a break-away latch. It's mowed a lot of rocks over a lot of ruts....

I just finished mowing 20 acres of grass and alfalfa mixed hay with a Vermeer 7030 disc mower. Took me 5 hours which might be slow for some folks but I'm happy with it. My next machine will be a disc mower conditioner, probably. Current machine is belt driven.

It all depends on what you want to spend. Right not Kuhn makes arguably one of the best disc mowers out there. They are also are not cheap. Drum mowers are probably the cheapest and are fairly relieable, they just don't cut very wide.

My opinion, buy a good used 7', 9' or 12' haybine depending on the size of your fields. You will sprobably spend less money and dry hay faster.

I bought a used discbine (NH 411) and quit using the disc mower all together. It will cut fast and dry hay faster than the disc mower.

Thanks for the info. Never heard or seen a drum mower before. Went to the website, liked what I saw esp. the price on the T-190. Question, does it cut behind the tractor or does it swing out to the side? Does the cut hay lay flat like after a sickle bar or is it windrowed up?

A neighbor of mine has a drum mower pretty much like the one in the picture. The mower cuts out to the side of the tractor and it lays the hay flat just like a sickle bar mower. They are real simple and fairly rugged mowers. They will mow generally just as fast as you want to go. Only real problem with them is that they generally do not cut a very wide swath and they lay the hay pretty flat down on the ground. Not as big a problem with grass hay, but definately a problem with alphalfa and clover.

I think most of them are belt drive. The newer krones are shaft drive. When I get ready for a new one I will look at the krones hard. People tell me they are a bit quieter also.

I don't think you could go wrong with either type as long as you get a good brand with good dealer support.
