I am in the process of repainting my plow in order to preserve it. It is a tumblebug or model 39 according to the two pictures I found on this site. I would like to know exactly what type of plow I have and what were the original colors? It is now green but has red paint under the green. I will restore a few parts now and repaint the whole thing in order to preserve for a complete restoration later. Any help identifying the plow and original colors would help. Thanks

Fred,

Your #39 IH plow is called a "tumbleplow".

A "tumblebug" is an entirely different implement/tool, which was used for moving/skidding dirt from one place to another.

Anyhoo, when they were new, the plows were painted totally red clear down to the wheels and hubs.

Found this picture for you, but it is not correct, as someone has doctored it with the white wheels.

Thanks, your picture is very useful and in fact the exact same plow I have. However the other post indicates three different colors were used originally. Do you know for sure that it should be completely red? I also read in the archive that the wheels (rims) should be tan and everything else is red. I know this is a technical issue but want it to be painted the original color scheme.

Allen, there is also a tumblebug for moving rolled hay, lots of folks here had them to use behind pick up trucks.

I think IH made a model 39. It will likely be IH red and IH blue possibly some black and cream. I have a picture of one if you like send me a email and I will send it to you.
