Hesston PT7 mower?

Just got a PT7 from a local farmer. Anybody have any experience with this mower. Any little tricks to know about it. I have ordered new blades and guards. The previous owner had some mixmatched guards on it. Ifigured for about $160 for new blades and guards it was worth it to start with all right parts. I plan on running it with a Belarus 400a (57 HP).

good mowing unit. one thing i would do, if it does not have them put stub guards on. mine had them when i bought it, first experience with them would never go back to regular guards.

I've mowed thick alfalfa at 5.5 mph with my PT-10 behind my MF-135 at 35 hp. The outer guard needs a shim to make it ride on the sickle section else it will plug.

Spread the windrow wide and it will dry a day sooner.

I cut hay for several years with a Hesston PT-7 my dad and grandfather bought in 1973. We pulled it with a Ford 3000 or Deutz 5506. After dad retired, a friend of the family bought it and still cuts all of his hay with it. Thirty three years of cutting in hilly, rocky country is a very good record for any machine. It was always a dependable mower for us.

I have a PT10 which is a larger version of the PT7. There are two differant guards that will bolt in place. they all should be the same though. Make sure the holddowns are ok. check the bar on the sickle to make sure it is not bent, binding or worn.
Check the sickle drive to make sure there is no slack. Otherwise it will beat itself to death.
I have run my PT10 with a 45 hp tractor with no problem.
