I aquired a Case 8420 round baler so I will be switching from small squares to the rounds. Does anyone have any tips on the difference between making squares and rounds? This will be my first attempt with a round baler. Also any tips on using the 8420 would be appreceiated.
Thanks, DJ

Try to make tight bales. I buy hay from a couple places.. one guy bales them so loose they are hard to pick up with a loader bucket and strap.. they flatten out too much..

I had one of those balers and a great machine but very loose and light bales. 375 pounds in grass hay. I got the best bale with a light windrow and drive slow. But not fast that way. Go fast--real fast and you get hay gobs when they settle. Best stored undercover. LB

The 8420 is a good baler, I have one. I was suprised at how well it will eat the hay since it is so small. Just make sure the hay is real good and dry, sticky hay will jam and mangle the pick-up in about 3 seconds.

I find I can make better bales by raking the width of the pickup with a v rake. Keep the outer edges of the bale full.
I also find I can bale with higher moisture with a round baler.

Make your windrows 1/2 the width of baler and weave from side to side or make windrows same size and drive straight down windrow. On most later model rd balers once core is started they will accept a lot of hay quickly. V rakes are very good for rd baling. Tx Jim
