I have trouble with the end shoe plugging on my JD 350 sickle bar mower. Replaced the outer knife section. The end ledger plate is serrated on the inside edge only. Seems odd, but that's the way the manual shows it, too.

Advice?

Had the same problem on the 800 swather. We welded an extra section to the end of the cutter bar. problem solved.

Check the knife for straightness. If you contact an object with the end of the knife, outside the shoe, it can cause the end of the knife to bend up. This will leave a gap between the section and the ledger plate. If there is a gap, then the hay will not cut cleanly and plug.

I had the same plugging problem with my #5 mower. I tried a double end sections, new ledger plates and correct to the book shimming but the problem still presisted. Finally one day in shear frustration, I welded up a piece and mounted a ledger plate above the section so the section sheared thru a top and bottom ledger. Dad said it wouldn't work, but the problem was solved.

Did you see my post... that's more or less how that mower is supposed to be set up... I'm wondering if he is missing the top plate, or doesn't have it set down close to the sickle?

In principle, the plate diagram #16 is about the same function, only Deere was alot neater about it. Mine is a tee shaped bracket to which a standard ledger was riveted and is parallel to the section. Kind of crude by most standards. But it does the job.

Third Party Image

Do you have Key # 16, "strap" in place, and set down close to the top of the sections? This helps keep cut grass from plugging the otherwise open area above the sickle.

Bob,
You were right - my mower was missing the strap (#16). I ordered one.

Thanks a million,
Larry G.

How is the clearance between the sickle and the ledger plate in the outer shoe? You may have to take a shim out of the holdown closest the end of the bar.

Did you replace the end knife with the double knife? This would help. A H&S end section.
