Hey gang:
Post hole diggers sure try a guy's patience with a small tractor. I posted a pic in the tractor photos if anyone wants a chuckle. Ground starts out with nice sand for the first foot, and then clay and black muck due to the proximity to the pond. Without clearing virgin bush, this was the most suitable place for a small lamb paddock on our place. But then I started drilling holes... small hidden boulders, three inch roots. I've done 12 holes and had to dig the auger out three times. And it happens so fast! The auger is spinning fine and then it nosedives under something I can't see. I got the brilliant idea I could move the tractor up and back to help loosen the hole and lift it out- seems like a logical idea - and spun the tire off the wheel. Dang! I'm sure by the time I finish all the holes I will have uncovered Jimmy Hoffa, found an artesian well, and wrecked the hydraulic pump. Is this too much work for my little VA? I'm hoping it's just operator stupidity :{

Jason, are you clearing the hole every 8 to 10 inches or so? Don't try to bore the posthole all the way down in one go. Lift the auger upward in the hole every so often to clean it out. Just like you would clear chips when drilling with an electric drill in wood.

I've been lifting and dropping the auger (9") throughout the hole drilling. I figure it's the gumbo I'm working in, or the lack of pto hp - if anyone could correct me, I think the VA rated in at 17? The little guy is shaking around quite a bit - yesterday the top link where the auger mounts rattled the pin off and left me at the bottom of the hole with only the lift arms. That was fun. I appreciate this little machine for all it does for us here, but if I'm going to kill it then I'll (gulp) dig the holes manually. If it's operator mistakes, then I'll keep digging and live with each mistake.
