JD 214 baler needle problems

I used the 214T baler last week and I baled about 4-5 bales when I heard a loud bang. The needles where stuck in the up position and the needle lift rod had snapped. The right needle was hung up on the right knotter, I got it unstuck with a little prying with a large screwdriver. What would cause this to happen and can I use a lever to slightly bend the needle so it won't catch on the knotter? I don't know why the shear pin on the rod didn't break, it's just a cotter pin. Also the knotters are not tying on the needle side, (both knotters) but I don't know if this is just because of the knotters not being used and they aren't polised yet. Anyone got any ideas?

The best thing you can do is to get a manual for the baler.

The plungerhead stop is stuck or spring that is supposed to pull it inside bale chamber is broken/missing. Check needle brake to see if its tight enough as when loose and baler trips to tie it allows needles in chamber to fast. Always need to check each day for correct operation of plungerheadstop to help prevent needle damage. Have you tried adjusting needles at bolts on needle frame? Worse scenerio is needle frame is bent. Tx Jim
