New Idea wheel rake?

Are they any good? Will they work on hilly, irregular shaped fields of fescue/clover type hay? Lots of curves and corners? Looking at one thats 5 wheel trailer type.

Wheel rakes in general work quite well. Some brands are better than others simply because of a better design. ALL wheel rakes need to be adjusted correctly for current field conditions. Basically, if the rake is digging dirt and bending teeth, you need to make some adjustments. Likewise, if the rake is missing hay, or skipping over the hay, adjustments need to be made. The owners manual gives all of the info necessary to ensure that the rake will do the best job possible. The owners manual can be your best friend. Use it.

Farmer who rented this place had a 6 wheel 3pt hitch unit. Was not impressed. Bound, bound, bound. Left a lot of hay, raised a lot of dust. Maybe the trailer type would do better. I use a 3pt 5 bar pto powered unit - does s far better job.

We once had a 4 wheel, 3pt tunitti. It was crap. broke a lot of teeth. A real B.... to change. Didn't rake hay very good. Mostly in balls, didn't rake on the corners.

The wheels are kind of stiff though the whole wheel floats some. So they dig more dirt than others with springy teeth. Look for Farm Hand wheel rake teeth. I have one that I plan on taking to a sale in Marshal County next Iowa Saturday. The wheels spin on plain bushings, not ball bearings.

Wheel rakes in general work pretty good. We've got an older 5 wheel and it works great on heavy 1st crop, lighter crops like 2nd and 3rd sometimes give it trouble. That's mostly because the bushings in the wheels are long gone. We only paid $7.50 for it so we really didn't expect much...

They work just as good as anything on hills and corners etc- the only way to be any better if the rake were a 3 pt mount or had a hydraulic lift.

Some people don't like them because they tend to bring up some extra trash and dirt ino tthe hay, but we really haven't noticed many problems with dirt. It does bring up some dead corn stalks or whatever else was in the field the last 2 years, but that's expected. Doesn't hurt the feed much as a whole either.
