Hi All , Am I the only one that's waiting ( at least here in Iowa ) for any dry weather at all to cut hay ? I've had over 3" of rain in the last week , and the forecast is for rain for 5 of the next 7 days . The alfalfa is in full bloom and the so is the grass , not to mention the thistle . Looks like the first cutting will be nothihg more than roughage for the horses . Nobody is cutting hay around me that I've seen . How is everyone elses hay doing ? Take care ! ...Randy

Up here in MT that good hard rain saved us from destruction. So everything is spindly on bottom and now it"s trying to grow a big top and I"ll bet $10 everybody"s hay lays over before July. I"ll be cutting early if I can get this junkshow in order...

Finished first cutting of mixed grass hay here in northwest N.C. middle of May. Yield was 50-60 % due to dry conditions. Last appreciable rain was 2" in mid-April. Scarcely any since then. Cut-over hay fields have little re-growth and would burn easily. Pastures I have seen are grazed to the ground. Corn planted near here looks very bad. Tropical storm system moving northward looks as if we could be in for a good soaking Sunday. Yippee !!!!!

Just starting to look like we might get some rain here tomorrow. Been dry since May 9. Its been 30 days on most of the alfalfa, first cutting was short (25% or so) from a cold wet April with a week of freezing temps. This second cut wont make much either, no water.

With that said, grass hay has been turning out gangbusters. Finished at my dads place yesterday. I'm maybe 1/4 done with mine. Planning to hit it again next week when the weather comes through. I ws just piddling along with mine, cut a pasture field I rent to a neighbor for holstein heifers. 15 acres with 10 heifers on it all spring and it still made 97 rolls.

Last year I planted and could not buy a drop of rain. this year just as I (the alfalfa)was ready to mow the rain began in ernest. 3 inchs and forcast is for more for a week ahead. Feast or famine, oh well, I get to chase my bride of 43 years around. Right now she is makeing an Rhubarb Crisp and a fresh pot of coffee. My motto; Live-Laugh and enjoy it while you can. Bob

No rain. Hay quality is very good. Quanity, not so good. Around here it's 1/4 to 1/2 of normal.

I had every intention of getting a hay field started this spring. Guess what, weve not had any rain since. Here in Georgia we havn't had a drop in a long while. What we do have is plenty of trees. How do I know that...? Cause they are burning!

Hi Randy! In western Mass. some guys have just got started, but the fields are pretty soggy. Lots of ground water with no place to go. Lotsof clay on our place, so I'll just wait it out.The stuff sure is growing fast though, and will be hard to mowe.

Walked and talked with my neighbor last weekend about cutting hay for his cattle. We are waiting for several fields to "dry" out enough to get on them with equipment.

Neither of us are complaining because of the 3 year drought we have been through. We welcome all the rain we can get.

Since I don't "run" cattle, he gets the hay for his labor and I don't have to mow the fields. Win-Win situation for both of us. He does bale our hay meadow to feed my favorite wife's horses.

Most hay aroung NE Texas has already been cut, bailed, and stacked/stored.

We hope to get a first cutting this month if it ever dries up.

I have a former wife (exwife)who married my best friend (exbest friend). He then became my husband-in-law.

Two people never deserved each other more than these two. They shortly got divorced and now he is my exhusband-in-law. He will be paying child support until he's 62 if he lives that long.

However, the SOB ( Sorry Old Boy ) did introduce me to my favorite wife. We celebrated our 19th anniversary in March. I refer to her fondly as my favorite wife. She is the best thing that ever happened to me.

I usually start Memorial weekend or thereafter. Funny that growing up we rarely cut hay till after 4th of July. Course that was when we had Timothy and Redtop. Seems like everyone cuts (fescue now) before Memorial day. Been raining or threatening for a week now. I plan on trying to cut tomorrow if the forecast holds up.

Here in TN. it seems like everybody is cutting or has already cut and baled their hay. I don't think we have had any rain in 2 weeks.

Most of my hay has done good so far. I've never been able to cut one day and bale the next in may before this year. We are ready for rain NOW.

We just came off a week of great weather here in the People's Republic of Connecticut, and we made some of best 1st cutting we ever have.

For us, it is rare to cut in May and with last year's wet June, we had to make most of our 1st cutting in July.

With a little luck, we may be able to put up some 3rd cut this year.....

They're far more competent and less corrupt then our current elected leaders, and with melanine in dog food and antifreeze in toothpaste it seems their inspectors still seem more qualified then the ones working for ConnDOT. $80M of bad pipe installed under an interstate and no one noticed...

Ranting about this state circling the drain faster then any other in the nation aside, maybe 1/3rd the hay is cut out in Eastern CT. Looks nice for a 1st cutting, but we're getting into a cycle of pop-up afternoon T-storms. As long as those stop by the end of the week, things should be OK. If not, the farmers will be doing like last year and cutting the 1st in July and not getting a 3rd.

Wish we had some of your excess rain, lot of hay being made but a lot is also going in as silage as is normal for first cutting. Less than an inch in May. Just checked and Yahoo says you are 640 mile from me. Did you get the email I sent you ?

Hi Leroy , I got the email . Will write back soon . I'm bored at the moment since it's to wet to do hay , most of the hay equipment is ready to go and I can't spray for weeds either . Thought of starting to put struts on the old Dodge Dynasty my wife bought me about a month or two ago but really don't want to . Heck I don't drive it anyway so why put money in it ? So it sits in the drive with a dead battery . More rain expected , had tornado's southeast of me this afternoon near the big muddy . I just got 3/10th's ...Randy

Hi Seth , Yup ! I'm getting ready to build a swath-aerator for it this week . Got it all adjusted right for my crop ( I hope ) . Now all I need is a few rainfree days . I think I'm going to upgrade next spring to something else but just don't know what yet . I've got to build a crop divider for it this week too . The grass and alfalfa are already almost waist high . It's too far gone to be good horse feed now . But it'll keep their guts in good shape with the excess roughage . Take care ...Randy

The boys are cutting for silage and wrapped bales locally, no dry hay yet that I know of. One bunch of wet is leaving, another headed our way. We needed that rain as we hadn't had any to speak of for about a month. I know thats nothing to some of you guys, but it's a bit odd for this part of the country at this time of the year. Be a couple weeks yet before any real dry haying starts. This is the St Lawrence Valley on the NY/Canada border.

The lovcal forecast last week was about a 30-60%chance of rain everyday, but weather.com said it was only 10% everyday. I cut everything we have on Monday, checked the forecast one weather.com again that night when I finished and they upped it too. Now today it got rained on heavily after I raked for about 45 minutes.

We were hoping to get started tomorrow and we only have a 3 day window where we can really get at it. Now it'll be down to 2 days for 35 acres and very limited help.

I got my alfalfa/orchard grass cut last Saturday and baled just a little before completely dry on Tuesday. Laid the bales on the floor of the barn so they could dry out better without getting any mold. Never saw any leaf loss to speak of. I just love the sweet smell of alfalfa! Then the skies opened and no one has been doing hay around here since. I'm in northern Iowa near Fort Dodge. This is the best hay I've had and I cut it just before the alfalfa went to full bloom. When is the best time to cut alfalfa? I want the best nutrition value for my sheep.

We are in the same boat here in the southeaster corner of the state except we've had 6-7" of rain in the past 8 days so even when the forcast improves it will take a couple good drying days to get the ground dry enough to mow. We were lucky to get about 50 acres up that was mowed two weeks ago this weekend but we still have a couple hundred acres of first cutting to go.

Well about 2 weeks ago I cut some, sure wish I had cut more. Then we got rain and I'm now waiting for thewm to say no more rain and I'll be cutting more. It does look like where I cut I may get another cutting so thats why I wish I had done more.

Here in Gerald I'm still sitting here cooling my heals. I haven't go into one field yet, just too dern wet. I have a bottom field that is just as soft as a baby's bottom. Funny, I complained about the drought last year now I'm complaining about it being to wet. I'm hoping for about 60-65 bale sthis year.

Sam, I am just a little ways from you as the crow flies over between New Haven and Hermann. I cut quite a bit on the 17th of may when everybody else was telling me the nights were too cool but by the following monday I had baled 2,000 squares and 160 rounds. With the rain and warm temps since it is well on it's way to a second cutting. I'll get a second cutting sometime in July and a third in late september.

Well I hope you don't have the problem I found so far. The area I did cut and bale should have put out 4 or 5 bales and it I only got 1.5 bales off of it. Seems like its real thin this year, guess it was because of a hot march and then a cold april.

I should have cut the third week of may like most everybody else did, but they we calling for T-showers that never came.

The past two weeks have been the same, scattered T-storms, but no rain either.

Next week was supposed to be all scattered or isolated storms, but now showing dry (10% chance) for the first of the week. I'm hoping to cut then. Grass is going to seed and starting to brown some at the tops... Like to get it in before it gets to "stemy"
