Hi all , I got all my stumps out and had quite the mud hole . See the bad picture on it's side since I don't know how to rotate images or size them for download . The picture was taken a few weeks ago , things have dried up nicely since then . I was able to pull it out right after this picture was taken with a JCB 530 bhl telescopic 4-wheel drive I had brought home from work . The box blade I use does a good job and I set the rip teeth as low as possible to bring up shallow roots . But would it be a good idea to drag my 21 foot disk with the wings folded up over it to cut as many up as possible ? I could pull a plow through it too for that matter . I don't have a york rake and can't afford one right now . Don't have the time to remove roots by hand either , besides , I don't have that sort of ambition . HA-HA ! I'm going to seed it with pasture grass . Just an acre or so . Not going to mow it with anything more than a horse or two unless the weeds get to bad . Thanks ...Randy

i do dozer work and when i clear land for pasture i just get land as level as possible and then run a brush hog over exposed roots...2 years time roots should be gone from rot.

A chisel plow(no coulter type) will do a good job of dragging roots out. Criss cross the area several times then use a disk to get the last of them.

Hi MSB , Don't have one of those and doubt if my neighbors have one small enough for my little tractor . They all run 150 horse or higher tractors . I'm trying to get it done with what I own - a box blade , a disk and a number of different size plows . I don't do a lot of tillage on 13 acres so I don't have that other stuff . in n al we have what is called a bush and bog disk with like 24 inch blades on it. the old ones were pulled with a tongue on them but i cut mine down and made it into a three point hitch and it works wonders on stumps and roots. one word of caution - don't drive the tractor directly off into the hole because it will be real muddy and you'll be stuck in a hurry. just keep going around the edges until you fill it in a little at a time. if you have access to a back hoe use it to loosen the dirt up around the hole and then new dirt you haul in will mix with the old and fill the hole up nicely. just dumping new dirt in the hole want let the two different soils mix totether and it will always be a mud hole.

Hi John , The picture in the link is just that , I got to close to a hole I just filled in a day or two before and that was it . The top was more or less dry dirt but a few inches under it it was slop . I couldn't tell where all the tree stump holes were anymore . So I found the biggest one ! I'd like to find a cheap subsoiler shank and just pull it around out there for a while . But for now I have to use what I have on hand . Thanks ! ...Randy

BTDT and the best way I have found is a big tractor and a small plow. Say a 50HP tractor and a one bottom plow. That way you have the power to rip them up but not all that big an area to get the plow stuck

Hi Old , I don't think my email was sent through . I used the email link and I think it deleted it before it was sent .

I have a two bottom I could pull around with my Oliver . That would be about 43 horse per bottom . I don't want to bend the plow though . I was thinking more of tripping/lifting three bottoms of my 656 semi mount and pulling one around in the ground . It won't pull good but the area is fairly small and so are the roots , most roots should be smaller than 2-1/2" . And they are 95% soft maple roots that break easy anyway . The other trees are mulberry and choke cherry . All three are just noxtious weeds around here . All it's going to be is pasture . I'm not planning on mowing it very often except with a couple of horses . Just enough to keep the trees from coming back . I just don't want roots hurting the horses feet or my tractor tires . Another way would be to find an old wore out plow and then make a set of rippers out of it. Thats how the big boys do it with a dozer and rippers on back. Mkaes short work of roots and rocks

Randy,

A few years ago I plowed a field that had been "grubbed out" by a crew of guys with a bulldozer. I was using a Ford 5000 and a 3-16 plow. The roots that were underground caught the plow bottoms with such force, the bottoms either tripped or the plow stopped the tractor. It was really nasty. I finally got the whole field (about 5 or 6 acres) plowed, but it took a really long time over a two day period.

I would pull the disc over it a time or two. Probable won't do all that much to the roots but should result in a field that you could run a brush hog over to keep weeds down. Roots rot with time and grass sods eventually takes care of a lot of flaws

Hi Sid , This is the easiest solution I think . If it doesn't work then I can try something else . But I don't think I can break anything doing it this way first . If I had just done this last year my boss still had a dozer with a ripper on back I could have used . But he sold all the heavy equipment this spring . All he has left is a mini-ex , a skid-steer , a jcb 530 telescopic and 6 cranes . So I have to use what I have available . After dragging the box blade with the scarifier teeth down as far as they would go it's not that bad now . It's still to wet to disc there today and will probably stay wet for a week or two according to the weather guessers . Thanks ! ...Randy
