How do you decide between buying one , say for $350 from fleet farm, or just renting one when needed, when you only need it for making a fence, coral once or twice, maybe putting up a small pole shed. And then you may be done with it for years. Is there much demand for lending them out, to people you trust of course.

You'll have to beat people away with a stick. It gets tiring, as it will come back with bad shear pins, chewed up dull teeth, and bent auger from rocks.

You want to buy one, but you _never_ want to let people know you have one! Even those you 'trust'. Work in the dark if you are by a road.....

Well, I spent the bucks. Have it when I need it, don't have to chase around to rent one. (By the way, the motor powered hand run augers are man killers, ask how I know, ask why I bought a pto unit.) No, the neighbors don't get to borrow it. My son and I are the ONLY operators. And we have some strict rules about operation. They sure beat a manual digger. I figure mine paid for itself awfully quickly, last time we put up a fence!

They come in handy if you are planting trees and bushes too.

also for burying guts from deer or hog butchering. You can find many uses for them. Disconnect the auger & use the rest for a light duty boom.

theyre handy to have around IF you got the spare cash to burn...as far as letting folks borrow it you'll have a never ending line at your door OR wanting you to build fence for them...fence building is one of those talents/curses i've got and i usually do it at nite so nobody knows i can ;)
personally i'd buy a name brand digger if you get one
