Sickle mower guards

My mower is a very old IH, if that matters. A couple of my guards have the upper part, the part projecting over the top of the sickle knife, bent up far too much. I assumed that regular cast iron would break rather than bend, so these must be malleable iron. But I fear that trying to bend them back might break them for certain. Heating to assist bending might make the iron brittle- regular cast iron. Sure, I can buy some Chinese stuff that will work as replacements, the #700 that the local dealer has. But lets talk about the originals I have. Bend back? How? Leave alone?

there is nothing special about the top of a gaurd. if you break it off just weld it or another piece of flat steel on.

I went through the same thing with an IH 31 with old guards and worn out ledger plates. Finally I bit the bullet and bought some of the chinese farm store guards. I still have the old guards, and they are actually in pretty good shape except for the ledger plates. Might put new plates in them if I find them and get a little time. I do know I have broken a couple of the chinese guards and they are brittle and break before bending in my experience. I think I paid around $7 each on sale, but it cuts much like it did when I was a kid now once I got it adjusted and put new wear plates, sharp sickle, etc. (I choke on buying the off shore stuff as well, but sometimes you have little choice).

Why do you think they are bent up to much?? 1/2"
is not to much. If you bend them down real close
they will clog up with grass. If it doesn't mow well
its probrobly because the ledger plates are bad, the knives are bad and not close enough to the ledger plates.or some other adjustment.

I ran an old IH for several years. I found it better just to bite the bullet and get new ones. Bending the back occasionally worked. However, what do you have to lose by bending them back? If you break them they are no good to you and if you leave them as is they are no good to you. BTW. you did not ask this but I never did have any luck replacing the ledger plates either. Byu the time the ledger plate was worn out, the rest of the guard was worn out also.
