I finally got to looking at the 532. Might have found at least part of the problem on it. I have a broken spring on one of the hay dogs - the top middle. I discovered this while trying to remove the plunger. I never got the plunger out yet and I could not get the bolts loose on the plunger knife (part of the reason for trying to remove the plunger). Those allen heads are hard to get to on that plunger knife. Also looks like it might be a bear to replace that hay dog spring. Hope I don't have to remove the knotters to get to it. I need a few pickup teeth as well so I guess I will try to order the spring and some teeth today then try to continue with the disassembly. If the weather is good I'd like to start baling in about a week.

I've never removed a hay dog or spring so I'm no help there.

I have removed the plunger and replaced the rollers, but I didn't mess with the knife. That is one awkward piece to deal with.

Just fyi for anyone buying pickup teeth (the ones mounted in rubber) Shoup (shoupparts.com) has them considerably cheaper than the dealers. The local dealer priced them at $21.83 each. Shoup has them for about $3.50 each. I have about 4 missing (3 in a row) so it was getting about time to start replacing some....I ordered a few extra since shipping was the same up to a certain amount. For $21.83 each I would probably run with 4 missing teeth or until it got to the point I was missing enough hay to justify the bank loan to buy the missing teeth.

Just a correction on the pickup teeth price.....the dealer price was $16.75 ea. THe $21.83 was for the dog spring.

I got my Shoup catalog about a week ago and promptly misplaced it. Now I have to find it again and hope my wife didn't toss it as "junk mail".

As I remember, the last time I looked at a Shoup catalog, the smallest rubber base tooth they offered had a 1-1/16" gap at the mounting saddle and I think these Ford teeth have a 1" gap. Did you find some at Shoup with the 1" gap or do you plan to shim the larger ones? I'm very anxious to hear how it works out for you.

Hi Jim....I guess I am getting ready to find out. I have 8 of them coming. I do know I bought a couple of the generic teeth from the farm supply that would not work and took them back. These show the dimensions, but I have not checked the actual sizes, just going by them showing as a replacement and the Ford part no. I will post back how they work when they arrive.

That would be GREAT! I've got my fingers crossed that they are going to work.

The knotters can be unbolted and flipped up out of the way in a couple minutes. Just remove the 3/8" bolt at the rear that holds them down. That should give you better access to the hay dog. Beyond that, I'd advise agains trying to remove those plunger knives unless they're shot. If you do need to remove them, cut the bolts and replace them.
I'd be very careful about doing much around the plunger, or adjusting it. The knife guide along the chamber is part of that sequence, and it, and it's shims are NLA. Believe me. I know from experience. Also, if you have bales that are not separated properly, it may be due to too much tolerance on the knife guide... in which case, you out of luck unless you can make something. Really, the fewer things you tinker with or take apart on those balers, the further ahead you are.... because you don't know when you're going to break a NLA part.
For what it's worth, the pickup fingers and the plunger knives are still available.

Thanks Rod. I actually have the plunger part way out (I could not get it all the way out of the bale chamber). I guess I will try to get it back in and reconnected. The knives actually dont look too bad, but it did appear that I might have a little extra clearance between the knives. My manual shows the 532 as having a different plunger than I do. Mine looks to have the same plunger as a 542 baler and it completely runs on rollers (bearings). Not sure if this is something that has been replaced or if they went to a different plunger on later models.

It's probably 7 or 8 years since I had the plunger out of my 532. If I recall correctly, it had a full set of bearings on it... probably 4 or 5, that I replaced at the time. I was also thinking more about this too.... but the knife guide runs against the plunger knife... which sets that tolerance.... and as I said, you can't get the guide or shims for the 532... so I wouldn't even breath on that if it's close to working right. Mine is off some, and I've just got to live with it. I did a dealer brodcast at that time looking for NOS parts, and there were none to be found... or at least no dealers in North America replied that they had any....
I'm also reasonably certain at this point that the baler was made by New Idea. The knotters at least bear a very striking resembelence to the knotters on the Hesston/Case/IH inline balers of the later 80's that I've seen.... and I'd assume thast the Hesston stuff was a carry forward of NewIdea since they got absorbed into that morass at some point in time.
Ford/NewHolland will not admit to ever having made the baler, nor will they cop to having had it made for them..... apperantly they want to let it die and the secret is going to the grave as far as they're concerned. Anyhow, good luck with it... and if you get in a spot, holler and I'll see what I can come up with. We still use our old blue... and had it knocking out close to 400 bales per hour last summer.

I also am fairly sure that these were made by Ford as every casting on them has the Ford logo on it.

The knotters are McCormick Deering so is New Holland and others as well. IH used 4 or 5 different knotters. The hay dog springs are not hard to replace. They are available from NH, but are quite high. I got new ones for mine at local hardware store and they have been working well for the last 12 years. The baler will not ever work right with broken dog springs.
