New Idea Sickle bar mower with mechanical lift

My aged New Idea Mower is giving me some greif! The mechanical lift works and lifts and holds the bar up fine. When the lift is tripped and it lets the bar drop, but the lift mechanism continually tries to lift the bar then stops very quickly and disengages and then reengages the lift cycle. It does this constantly while the bar is in the down working position. Anybody know what the problem is and how it can be fixed? Any and All help is appreciated. Thank you all kindly.

I think you need a return spring to hold the trip lever back, but you should take the top cover off and clean out the old grease and lube replenish with new, alittle servicing will go along way.

My Dad bought one of those new in the mid-50s. At that age- I'd go with the two previous posters- take the gearbox apart, clean it out, check for broken spring or other parts.

If it works anything like my old John Deer drill lift, I'd say you have a stretched or broken trip spring.
