Vermeer 504 Super 1

Local NH dealer has a used Vermeer 504 Super1 that appears to be in pretty good shape. Belts are a little frayed along the edges is about all I can see at the moment. Are these good balers, how old would that model be and what are their weak points ? What would it be worth ? Thanks for your input.

Thanks fellas for your great input. I've learned a lot about this baler from you. Just talked to the dealer but I think he's a little too high at $7500 (Can.) and some of the lacing is poor as well.

Well, I have a 505 Super I, and it is a 1995, so I was told. I bought it in 1999. It is an absolute hay eating machine. I have baled 1000's of bales with it and have done 1 thing to it in that time. Grease it. ( I also keep it inside. It has never sat out one night since I owned it.) A far as starting a bale, well I open the throttle and start down the row. No such thing as not starting the bale. It is a flawless machine, and I will only buy Vermeer balers after having this machine.
If it were me, I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it is in your price range and seems to be what you want.

I got a Massey fergeson baler made by vermeer same as a 605h?? (I buy Vermeer parts). It"s about 20 years old but I have put up 300 bales+ every year. It is a little hard to start a bale if the hay is not quite dry enough and you have to go a little slower than the new ones. But my neighbor has a John deere that he bought new last year and my baler will put up just as tight.

They are very good balers. Have a combination of springs and hydraulic pressure on belts. Model run started in 1992. They start bales reliably and will bale damp hay. If the 504 does not start bales well, a likely suspect is the pickup teeth which are rubber mounted and the rubber-metal connection will weaken over time and the teeth will not push the hay into the bale chamber as well. So I would flex the teeth and try to compare with new teeth.
I would not buy it or another baler without hearing it run. BTDT. Bearings to be suspicious of are the top roller and the bottom roller that drives the belts. In fact, the single most common problem in balers is the bearings, so listen closely to all. Maybe even carefully use a mechanics stethscope.
Don't know about prices.
Belts being a LITTLE frayed is no big deal, but check condition of laces.

The OEM Vermeer Rubber mounted teeth will outlast any steel tine on the market. All the Vermeer I balers have an adjustable pick-up cam so worn teeth will work just like a brand new tooth. The Super I baler come standard with spring tension and had an option of hydraulic assist belt tension. All the Vermeer Super I balers have 1 1/2" drive roller bearings. The standard Super I balers will baler haylage all day long for years and not have any problems. We sold over 1000 new Vermeer I balers and they will take hay faster that other MFG's balers because of the 5 bar pick-up and direct feed pick-up. Vermeer doesn't need stuffers like other MFG's. so Vermeer balers pull with less HP at faster speeds and still make a tight round hay bale.

KEH I gotta correct you. The 504 Super I was spring tension only. There is 2 springs on each side. One spring controls starting the bale and stretches with the bale size. and the second spring is not affected until the bale is started. Excellent baler. The only maintenence is keep the chains lubed. use your grease gun, and maybe a lacing tool. I ran many thousands of bales through mine. If a manual does not come with it, call Vermeer. They will get one to you ASAP. Wayne

Hey, Wayne,no problem with corrections. My 505I (not Super) has the 2 springs and I was told by the dealer that I could, for a price, get a hydraulic assist kit. When I looked at 505SIs I saw they had heavier bottom shaft bearings and a reinforcing plate so I did't want to put the extra stess on mine. Its a hay eating machine anyway. I think it failed to start one bale since I've had it,

Wayne and others,

Well. I spoke too soon about pickup teeth on the Vermeer balers. I had to replace several teeth on my 505I today. That's not my favorite job, seems like every position is uncomfortable to work from. It didn't help that the teeth cost almost $9 each.
BTW I asked the dealer about hydraulic assist and he said the 504SI first came out with springs only, later added hydraulic assist. So you were right.
