I know nothing about planters so I need a little help. There is an upcoming auction with a 4 row John Deere Flex 71 planter that I"m interested in. Unfortunately, there was an auction this past weekend that had metal plates in it and they had JD 7100 flex hand written on the plates NOT flex 71. I bought the plates hoping I would get the planter in the other auction and the plates were the correct ones. Is there a difference between Flex 7100 plates and Flex 71 plates? Also, I"m wanting to plant mainly peanuts and milo and maybe some soybeans with the planter. Does anyone know what plates would be needed for those 3 seeds? I"m needing the peanuts in the ground pretty quick so that info is important. Thanks in advance for the help.

The plates you need will depend on gear speed of the units..... .you will have to see what gears come with your units, and then cross reference with the seed size.

All I can tell you is check the parts catalogs since the 71 flex planter still is online. The 7100 is a Max Emerge planter with units mounted on tool bar and some were flex folding types but called Max Emerge. Not sure if some of the early ones or early Max Emerge 7000 ones used same type canisters or not but later ones were different with a 2 plate type or fingers or feed cups instead. For the plastic plates for your JD 71 check charts at: http://www.lincolnagproducts.com

JD 7000 and 7100 were available with either plate or plateless units (fingers and cups) throughout their production life. The 7000 bar was pull behind, then 7100 was three point and the larger 7100 had hydraulic lift wheels to help the three point. The planter units on the 7000 and the 7100 are identical even to the picture number in the parts books. In Iowa most were sold with the finger units for corn and cup units for beans.

I think the 71 are individual ground driven planter units, one per row, mounting optional and are only plate type units.

Some seed companies can still supply planter plates to fit the planter and the seed (better if they sold the seed). Last I noticed Albert Lea Seedhouse claimed they could supply such plates.

I'd be surprised if the 71 and 7100 plates weren't the same. For a lower volume item at the time they were made it wouldn't make sense have them different.
