Been a while since I side dressed any corn. How far off the row do you want the band of (Granular) ammonium nitrate? Thanks

my neighbor never fertlizes his peas. they bunch up good , but don't put on peas.

If ammonium nitrate, just sling it over the top. Have done it several times and would do it again, but N is around three times higher in this form. Another popular ag forum has several saying it is OK to broadcast urea over the top. I read this could burn corn if it got in the whorls and volatilization is also an issure if not incorporated or it rains soon afterward. AN doesn't have either of these problems.

Middle of the row equidistant from the corn rows, no need to prune roots putting the fertilizer down.

How are you putting it on? With cultivators and side dressers. I put mine on right behind the close plow shank. Which is about 4 inches from corn

Yep, fertilizer unit off a Ford 309 planter, mounted on an old set of Ferguson 2 row cultivators, powered by a wheel with fins made for such use (I think) in Tennessee. Worked dandy when I was raising tobacco.

I'm with george. I just plowed my sweet corn yesterday and side dressed it with 19-19-19. It's about 3" high. I'll hit it again when it's about 16" with ammonia. I use a Super A. I'm not much on broadcasting fertilize. It costs too danged much and it will burn the plants....put it where it needs to be.

I use to broadcast 2000 to 2500 lbs per acre of 8-10-15 on all my tobacco ground until the price hikes of a couple years ago. Now I put it on with 500 lbs per acre with the side dressers and another 500 lbs or 34-0-0 (ammonium nitrate) at lay by. It seems to be working just as well while cutting my fertilizer bill by more than half. I was using a total of 2500 to 3000 lbs per acre and now only 1000 lbs per acre. I have side dressed tobacco nearly waist high and raised the plows and the shanks were full of white feeder roots and does not hurt it at all. I have also side dressed corn all my life the same way and it does not hurt it either.

I was reading the other day how they purposely cut the roots around fruit trees in orchards to encourage vigor. It sorta like how the weight lifters bulk up...every workout tears the muscle fibers..as they self repair, they get bigger.

Hot here in Greenup county today, I'm wrestling with a 6 foot finish mower today, putting in new spindle bearings. Stuffy in the shop..thank god for a fan.

It works the same way with the tobacco. It will wilt down and look awful, but in the next day or two it has grown by leaps and bounds. Unless it is very dry then it takes a while to recover. It also makes the leaves thicken up thus adding weight. I assume you mean Greenup county Ky.

I never thought I could grow tobacco without side dressing. Especially the dark air cured (One sucker) I raised so much of. Same for corn both sweet & field. I'm looking for a cole gravity side dresser to mount on my AC G. I have so little now (<15 acres) I'd just as soon do it one row at a time. Oh well, til then I'll have use the 2 row. Thanks for all the replies!

I have alway's side dressed with ammonium nitrate, just started running the other fertilizer 2 years ago to save money. All the tobacco here is burley. I also side dress my 2 acre garden. Everything except for potatoes, they don't do well with to much nitrogen.
