I have the flywheel off the jd #5 sickle mower, a new key also, now how do I get it back together? put it on the shaft then hammer the key in or try to work both on at the same time?

Tell us about that tractor. Looks like a 41-47 1/2 B with spoke wheels, and cushion battery box seat. Some one did some changing.

I agree with Rich. Turn the crankshaft until the keyway is on top. Slide the crank wheel back on and align the keyways. Insert the key stock.

As a suggestion make sure you grease the box bushing on the pitman plate.

Be careful and key your finger away from the knife!

Hope this helps.

When I put mine back together I put the flywheel on then drove the key in,then with a hacksaw cut off the excess. Works fine,no problems. RVa
