kinda had a run in with some old barb wire with my jd#5 sickle mower, had to replace some rock guards, jd dealer was out of stock, so stopped by the local farmstore and got a handful of the universal fits. well they fit but the distance between the section and the cutter on the rock guard is too wide, can you bend the rockguards??? if so heat em or bend em cold??, i checked everything on the bar and its all straight, if i put an old guard on , the gap is good., i replaced all the sections while i was in there too.

I just bent 10 rock gaurds to close the gap between the knife and the gaurd/ledger. I heated them cherry red and used a box end wrench to bend the tip of the rock guard up tight to the knife. When the guard cooled it contracted back away from the knife about a 1/16th of an inch. Just did it on Sunday the 13th. Seems to work well. Good luck JW in NH

Webb's Sickle Service (www.sickleservice.com) can set you up with anything you would ever need for the sickle bar.

The "cutter" on the rock guard is also called a guard plate.

Yes, ledger plates and guard plates are one and the same.

You might consider replacing the guard plates on the rock guards.

Guard plates are available at the dealer and sometimes on eBay.

They might be a pain to replace if you do not have an anvil (guard and knife repair block).

Used rock guards might also work if the guard plates are good.

You can send me an email and I will forward it to a man that sells parts for #5 mowers.

Hope this helps.

Some will bend, some will snap like glass.

Do you have an operator's manual? There's tips in there and a bending tool is shown, at least in the later versions.

The dealer will have the correct guards in a day, right... that's probably the way to go.

Does bending really work? If you bend the guard up, now the blade and guard are no longer parrallel. I've had the same type problem with haybine guards, ended up getting the right ones. Maybe a machine shop can take a little off the "bed" side to bring it up closer to the blade.
