I got the ol' 3pt tiller tore apart to replace leaky seal. Luckily the inners (inclucing bearings) were not damaged. I do have a problem though, there are 2 fairly deep grooves in shaft where seals contact. I am going to emery cloth as much as possible and purchase new seals with a smaller I.D. but do not feel I will be able to totally remove groove. I was wondering about adding a heavy grease to gear box instead of oil in hopes that grease will not leak out new seals. Just wondered if the grease will curculate enought to keep top-most bearing lubricated--If not, should I just fill the WHOLE gearbox? I'd be open to suggestions on a good THICK type of grease to use. The tiller only runs about 10 hours a year. Thanks fellas. Mark

I work for the DoT and we use 80/90 weight oil mixed with chassis grease. It will form a slurry inside the gearboxes and prolongs use in the field so we can finish our mowing before the tractors have to go to the shop. Hope this helps. John.

Try "Speedy Sleeve". I beleive NAPA has them. it's a real thin sleeve(about .003-.005)that you drive over the groove. They're not cheap(about 20 bucks) but they're stainless and well worth it. Install in about 4 minutes.

you can fill groove with JB weld or similar product, let harden and file down and smooth out with emery cloth. At 10 hours use a year that would last a good many years. I've done it and it is surprising how long that will last.

Is it possible to change the position of the seals slightly; ie, not install them as deep so the double lip runs on a new part of the shaft? Not an ideal fix, but I have done it before on some of Dad's stuff when I was lucky enough he would agree to buy a new seal, although full well knowing would never go for a new shaft. They sell sleeves you can add to the shaft to provide a new surface, or you can make your own. Much more elegant solution to your problem, but involves more work and many (including my father) would not do it for 10 hours/year use. If you use grease, don't use a heavy grease. Go with a light type such as Deere's corn head grease, which I believe is a NLGI # 0. I would fill the entire box up to cover the top bearing, which would insure it gets some lubrication. However do leave a little air space for expansion.
