IH 315 packer mulcher crows foot wheel breaking

We bought a 26' wing fold IH 315 packer mulcher last year. Using it for the first time this spring we are breaking the crows foot style wheels when hitting rocks. I was pulling it about 5-6 mph and would slow down when I would see a rock but I still managed to break a few more in the center section only. Seems as if the castings are really soft and can't handle any solid hits especially in the center section. The crows foot wheels on the wings are fine. Anyone else see this before with this style wheel?

I remember reading somewhere in the sales literature that the 315's crows foot were either a forging or ductile iron casting, and both are pretty good stuff. Hard to imagine it being a forging though, that is an expensive process. Do know that they were expensive. I have a 24 ft model 315 and considered briefly about putting crows feet on the front until found out the crows were more than twice as expensive.

Seemed like an endless task removing stones from the fields at the home place in Ohio. In contrast, I have found very few in Illinois and now don't bother to purchase deep tillage tools which have the impact spring release. Running a non-release shank back in Ohio would have been a disaster.

Around here we get off and pick up those rocks. Most implements won't stand them to good.

Some of you probably have never seen rocks in fields. We have stone fences that are 6 feet wide piled 10 feet high on the line fences of the fields. To go and pick all the rocks is a futile effort. We got the packer mulcher to push them back in the ground only picking the big ones that stick up.

I forgot to mention we are farming on the the Niagara Escapement in Door Co, WI. Some of our fields have 3" to 6" of soil to the solid limestone with exposed rock ridges in the fields. Kinda hard to pick those. Other fields are gravel hills pushed up by the glacier. All of our discs are flex gang for this reason. Looks like we need a flex gang cultimulcher.

Our Brillion cultipacker we pull behind our drill has never broken a cast wheel in the 15 years we have owned it.

These crows feet must be pretty wimpy.

We to have lots of rocks in places. Limestone. During slavery a lot of these were picked up and built into fences. My dads place is a big rock with very little soil of any kind on it. Every year when we plow it turns up more and more. After it rains on the plowed ground we pick up as many as possible. The next year is the same story all over again.I do know what you mean it is a loosing battle.
