I got this 450 baler from a guy who says he wasnt ever able to use it because the hay wouldnt feed. Well I think I resolved that problem by correctly setting the roller tension. My question is getting the hay to start it's tumble. So far I have only tinkered with it and didnt want to mow a bunch of hay, but I did mow a little to use for test runs. I havent been able to get the core to start forming and tumble. It feeds fine, but then it just sits in there and slowly gets ground to powder rather than roll. I'm going to guess that my test windrows were not big enough. My question is, is there a way to scuff the inside rubber roller to give it more traction? On this old baler, as with most old rubber, it has a bit of glaze and not that fresh rubber tackiness. I was thinking maybe I could little hit it with a wire wheel? Anybody have any suggestions on this and other helpful suggestions for getting this thing up and going? These were certainly not the 4 foot windrows suggested in the book.

If you belts are moving very fast when the baler is empty then you have your start tension on the belts too tight. When the baler is empty the belts should just creep along. You can get them too loose but if they are too tight you are not starting a bale. You need to call 423-282-6969 and talk to Billy Lee. He has taught hundreds of people how to operate those closed throat balers. Yes, you need to have dry hay for these balers.
